A Word From Our Pastor
A Word from Our Pastor
We are currently in the season of Epiphany in the life of the church. Epiphany begins on January 6; twelve days following Christmas and continues for seven Sundays until Transfiguration Sunday on March 2. Ash Wednesday is March 5 this year.
The word Epiphany means
The word Epiphany means “to bring light” or “to cause to appear.” It asks us to sit deeply in the incarnation, to observe even the dark parts of it (thinking of Herod killing the Bethlehem baby boys), and the dark parts of ourselves. But then it asks us to glimpse into God’s glory and light made manifest to the whole world through Jesus - God in human form.
Reflecting on different seasons
Reflecting on the different seasons of the church liturgical calendar creates a holy rhythm within our spiritual journey. The Scripture readings throughout the year are designed to tell the story of God. The season of Epiphany calls us to look at the baptism of Jesus while remembering our own baptism. It gives us a glimpse into the beginnings of Jesus’ ministry and how the world begins to react to the Messiah among us. And the season moves us into a more disciplined inner reflection of our own selves that begins on Ash Wednesday and what we call the season of Lent.
Join us these next several Sundays
I want to invite you to join us in these next several Sundays in January and February as we study Jesus launching his ministry in the world and how we might receive the Good News of God’s love for us all.
Peace and grace,
James Haskins
